Thomson Reuters Thinks Not Responding To Their Email Means You’ve Freely Licensed All Your Content

We’ve seen some unique interpretation of copyright law over the years, but generally the really big companies — especially content-driven companies — have semi-decent lawyers. So it’s just bizarre and surprising that media giant Thomson Reuters apparently believes that it can license whatever content it wants by merely sending an email and saying that a refusal to respond will be taken as consent that it can use your content.

Why Do Police In Suburban St. Louis Have More Powerful Weapons Than Marines In Afghanistan?

What we’re seeing here is a gaggle of cops wearing more elite killing gear than your average squad leader leading a foot patrol through the most hostile sands or hills of Afghanistan. They are equipped with Kevlar helmets, assault-friendly gas masks, combat gloves and knee pads (all four of them), woodland Marine Pattern utility trousers, tactical body armor vests, about 120 to 180 rounds for each shooter, semiautomatic pistols attached to their thighs, disposable handcuff restraints hanging from their vests, close-quarter-battle receivers for their M4 carbine rifles and Advanced Combat Optical Gunsights. In other words, they’re itching for a fight. A big one. It’s a well-known horror that the US military greets foreign peoples in this fashion as our politicians preach freedom, democracy and peace. It’s an abomination that the police greet black communities in the States with the same trigger-happy posture. Especially on the occasion of an unarmed teen’s death by cop.

Watching a video on the internet may be terrorism

A Register reporter has been let away with a slap on the wrist after confessing to, what the cops claim, is an act of terrorism.

According to the Metropolitan Police, anyone caught watching a sickening beheading video will be treated like a terrorist. Lawyer and legal commentator David Allen Green challenged that claim – and we were sceptical, too.

(…)

The Met’s statement read: “We would like to remind the public that viewing, downloading or disseminating extremist material within the UK may constitute an offence under Terrorism legislation.”

LAPD Officer Says Tragedies Could Be Prevented If Citizens Would Just Shut Up And Do What Cops Tell Them To

But if you believe (or know) that the cop stopping you is violating your rights or is acting like a bully, I guarantee that the situation will not become easier if you show your anger and resentment. Worse, initiating a physical confrontation is a sure recipe for getting hurt. Police are legally permitted to use deadly force when they assess a serious threat to their or someone else’s life. Save your anger for later, and channel it appropriately. Do what the officer tells you to and it will end safely for both of you. We have a justice system in which you are presumed innocent; if a cop can do his or her job unmolested, that system can run its course. Later, you can ask for a supervisor, lodge a complaint or contact civil rights organizations if you believe your rights were violated. Feel free to sue the police! Just don’t challenge a cop during a stop.

Ferguson Cops Once Beat an Innocent Man and Then Charged Him With BLEEDING ON THEIR UNIFORMS

Wait—that’s got to be an exaggeration. It’s not like the reporter is actually quoting the charge sheet—

“On and/or about the 20th day of Sept. 20, 2009 at or near 222 S. Florissant within the corporate limits of Ferguson, Missouri, the above named defendant did then and there unlawfully commit the offense of ‘property damage,’ to wit, did transfer blood to the uniform,” reads the charge sheet.

Okay then.

Thomas the Tank Engine Themed RPG

Yet another project where the author hasn’t really thought about the whole IP thing.

This one doesn’t seem to actually have any experience doing large scale projects either.

I don’t even think this is something that anyone has ever thought of before. Imagine a cross between a post apocalyptic RPG like Fallout (other games are available) and the Thomas the Tank Engine universe.

This is rather exciting for me as I have little experience in rendering but I have some experiences in tinkering around with open source game engines so I think I can make the mechanics of the game really work well. One could even say it would be a very useful engine.

If I get enough funding I will be able to devote all of my time into this project and possibly even buy the rights to the Thomas the Tank Engine theme song. Now that’d be cool wouldn’t it ?

With the funding I will hire a small team of expert artists to lovingly create this open ended RPG for you. I will also looking for people new to the industry as it’s always easier to learn from each other.

US Police Fire Tear Gas On Al Jazeera Crew And Then Take Their Equipment

Last night, police in Ferguson, Missouri, attempted to disperse several hundred protesters with tear gas, stun grenades, and smoke bombs. It was the fourth night of demonstrations in response to the death of Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager, at the hands of a Ferguson police officer.

News organizations have had a notoriously difficult time covering the demonstrations in recent days as the FAA has enacted a no-fly zone over the area, preventing news helicopters from covering the scene, and police have often turned away and arrested journalists.

Last night, local news channel KSDK caught footage and photos of a SWAT team firing tear gas at an Al Jazeera America TV crew that was covering the events behind the police barricade. The SWAT team then moved to dismantle and carry off their camera equipment.
